This beautiful multicoloured “circles and beads” necklace is made from Tagua nut, the seed of the Ivory Palm which grows wild in the Amazonian rainforests of Ecuador and Colombia.

The Tagua nut has been used for centuries to make buttons, jewellery and carved objects. The harvesting of tagua supports around 35,000 indigenous people living and working both in the Amazon and craft communities throughout Colombia and Ecuador. The income this generates creates a strong incentive to preserve the forest where the trees grow. The nuts are left to dry for 3 years before they can be cut, shaped, polished and coloured with natural dyes.

Not only do the Tagua harvests provide employment for local communities, farmers and craftspeople, the Ivory Palm can be sustainably harvested encouraging the preservation, care and nurture of the rainforest land and habitat.

Max length 42 cm long. The necklace length is adjustable.
